The king of Scotland's skies, the white-tailed eagle.

Ben Alder Estate is home to some of Scotland’s most impressive birds of prey. White-tailed Eagles and Golden Eagles soar above the mountains and lochs, while Red Kites and Buzzards glide gracefully across open glens. Ospreys return each summer to hunt fish from Highland waters with remarkable precision. All while the small Merlins and Kestrels hunt low across the moorland.

Three species of deer roam the hills, woodlands and glens of Ben Alder Estate. Native Red Deer are the largest and most iconic, particularly during the autumn rut when stags roar across the hills. Roe Deer are smaller, shy woodland browsers often glimpsed at dawn or dusk. Sika Deer, originally introduced from Asia, are more secretive and favour denser cover. Deer have shaped the Highland landscape for centuries and are an essential part of the Estate.

Small Birds

The Estate hosts supports a wide range of smaller bird species across its rivers, grasslands and woodland edges. Oystercatchers, Ringed Plovers and Sandpipers are often found around water margins, while Robins, Thrushes and Greenfinches bring song and movement to woodland and Estate grounds. Though smaller in size, these birds form an essential part of the Highland ecosystem and add colour and activity throughout the seasons.

Fish

The rivers and lochs of Ben Alder Estate support important populations of Salmon, Brown Trout and Ferox Trout. The fish thrive in the Estate’s clear freshwater systems, with Ferox Trout growing large in the deep Highland lochs.
